About

Multilingual Eugene

Mutilingual Eugene was born when Maiko, a Japanese mother in Eugene, Oregon, heard sad stories of local families giving up on raising their kids to be bilingual because of myths they heard – “If they don’t speak English fluently before preschool, they’ll be behind” and “Learning a second language delays English development” etc.

Having been trained in second language acquisition, Maiko knew these beliefs were not supported by research. So, she decided to give a presentation about bilingualism. And that’s how this site and Multilingual Eugene got started.
